part 1: my first powerlifting meet

First of all, I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who was so nice and supportive leading up to my first powerlifting meet!!! I thought of all of you who left me nice messages and texts, and I swear it helped make me less nervous and feel strong knowing I had a lot of people thinking of me and rooting for me!!

Saturday night, I had to check in and weigh in at 5pm, so it was a kind of long day of waiting! I spent it getting my eyelashes done and shopping at Anthropologie to keep my mind as relaxed as possible! Once Mike got home from work, he got to deal with my anxiety. I told him he wasn't allowed to be saracastic at all and he had to just do whatever I told him to do ;) So we went for a drive and listened to music for almost an hour because I just didn't want to wait at home anymore! For some reason I was more nervous on Saturday than on meet day- I think it was just the anticipation that was getting to me!

Check ins and weighs ins went great though. At check ins, they just confirmed my 100% Raw Powerlifting Federation membership number and I had to give my openers, which made everything seem very real. My openers were a 253lb/115kg squat, a 148lb/67.5kg bench press, and a 297lb/135kg deadlift, which were all numbers that I have done multiple reps of before and I knew that I would have no problem nailing at the meet, nerves and all! For non-powerlifting savvy readers, you get three attempts to find your max weight you can lift, so you want your first lift to be something you are confident in getting so you can get a number up on "the board", even if you fail your next two attempts :)

I then went in to the back room and was weighed in. You can weigh in with or without clothes, but I kept mine on this time and weighed in at 128.6 pounds. The weight classes in this federation are different than in others, but I fell into the 132lb/60kg weight class. It was good to see and talk to people I know from lifting at the gym on Sundays and from when I used to workout there everyday three years ago. Everyone was super nice and encouraging and it was just nice to be around people who are "like me", as in, they have similar lifestyles, interests, and goals.

After all that business was taken care of, we went and had dinner at our favorite restaurant and I got what I normally get there (salad, bread, meatballs, and chicken limone). We also got frozen yogurt afterwards to really up my glycogen levels.

My coach told me to start taking ZMA about a week ago when I told him I was tossing and turning every night. It is zinc and magnesium and it helps recovery and gives you a deeper sleep. I've only been taking one a night (recommended serving is 3!) and I have never slept so well! So that night, I made sure to take my ZMA, and I actually slept great, which is very rare for me the night before anything important!

Sunday morning, I woke up at my normal, natural time (5:30) and just followed my normal morning routine (28oz of water, then hot coffee while browsing the internets). After that, Mike was working out in the garage, so I went and stretched and warmed my body up a bit. Then I packed everything up, showered, and made my breakfast.

I had planned on having my magical bagel and egg whites for breakfast, but I wasn't feeling hungry at all. So, instead, I made a smoothie with blueberries, strawberry whey protein, and water. The special glass made it the perfect meet day breakfast, and gave me my protein and carbs that I needed even though I had no appetite.

I didn't take a picture of everything that morning, but I packed my FitMark lunch bag with cinnamon sugar PopTarts, cut up strawberries, a bottle of my BCAAs mixed with water, a bottle of my preworkout mixed with water, my magical bagel, bananas, a Quest bar, and Swedish Fish. I also made a giant jug of my carb and protein intraworkout drink to drink throughout the day. I didn't end up having the strawberries, bananas, or Quest bar, but I did snack on everything else throughout the day. By the end of it, I was craving crunchy veggies and water soooo badly!

We got the the gym at about 7:45am and there were already lots of people there! I had to find my rack heights for the squat and bench, and I got all of my warm up numbers from my coach. I was ready to go!!
