Hi!

Welcome to my blog where I share what I eat, how I train, and how I live a happy, healthy life!

Memorial Day Weekend + The Gathering of the Tribe

Woah. Last Thursday feels so long ago!!! Sorry about that! I hope you all had a nice long Memorial Day weekend <3

So, last Thursday morning was 5x3 back squats and I meant business. I have been going off of 250# for my numbers and last time we did 5x3, I got 220x3 and then 2 reps at 225. This time, I really wanted to skip 220# altogether and go right for 225.

I got it for three, nice and strong! Then I got it for two more and was happy with that too. Here's a little video of my set of 225x3...

Then, I did the kettle bell WOD and whenever I fail a lift, I get a little angry and make up for it on the KB WOD. It's a little tradition.

5 rounds for time of 10 Russian swings, 10 catch & release swings, and 10 squat cleans. I did the first 3 rounds without putting the kettle bell down at all. The 10 reps of each just seemed so do-able, I wanted to try and hold on as long as I could. Three rounds was as long as I could. I rested for a second before the fourth and fifth round, and finished in 5:40, feeling like I made up for that last back squat ;)

Thursday afternoon, I headed back to do the EWOD {Endurance Workout} of 6x400m runs. The first 4 were good, the last two were tough, but I pushed hard and my legs were feeling all the work they had done that day.

Friday morning really crushed the legs a little more.... My quads were exploding with this rowing and overhead squat workout! The OHS were 75# and after rowing fast, they hurt! I cranked through my last row and *just*  finished 5 rounds as the timer went off!

After school on Friday, I started my weekend off by correcting a ton of my fourth graders papers. Ruby was very confused by the whole thing because I rarely have to take work home, and she wasn't really having it. But, I figured I had better get it done before the busy weekend ahead...

On Saturday morning, I headed to the Box for the Third Annual Gathering of the Tribe. Last year, Mike and I had just started Crossfit and I was too scared to go to the Gathering by myself while he worked. This year, things were a little different ;)

It started off with a fun Community WOD in which more experienced Crossfitters partnered up with visitors/newer people and did 30-20-10 of wall balls, burpees, and sit ups. It was a fun way to start the day and meet some new people.

Then came WOD #2... "Jackie". I'd never done this Benchmark Girl before, but it was pretty terrible on my poor legs. 1000 meter row, 50 thrusters with the bar, and 30 pull ups. I cranked through the row {probably way too fast actually}, my quads wanted to burst on the thrusters, and then I did 5 pull ups at a time with a little too much rest in between. By the time I got to the pull ups, I was pretty much out of gas. I finished in 10:14Rx, and next time, I plan on pacing the row, flying through the thrusters and resting less on the pull ups- maybe doing fewer at a time, hopping off the bar and then getting right back on!

Then came the third workout of the day... As many reps as possible of bodyweight back squats.... I was excited for this one {even though I knew my legs were done and I would probably be crippled afterwards}. I didn't really have a goal going into it, but once I got to 30, I kept going, then getting to 40 felt good, but I knew I had at least a few more in me, so I got to 45 {which tied another guy's score} and did one more to make it 46 squats at 135#. This is a little video my coach took somewhere in the 30's.... The worst pain was probably the bar resting on my neck bone- I can hear myself complaining about it in the video!

The last ten or 15 reps were angry ones. Mike says he'd never seen me like that or make the face I made during it haha

That night, we went to the Kielbasa Festival to load up on some meat!!! A turkey leg, steak and cheese, and two nice cold beers did the trick!

And I love this picture my coach took of me and him when he found us roaming around the K-Fest!

Sunday morning, my legs didn't even work. I sat the first WOD out and cheered everyone on. It looked terrible {it was one of Mike's kinds of workouts, and he did great on it!} It was 10 rounds for time-TEN- of 100m sprint, 10 toes to bar, 100m sprint, 5 burpees. Repeat 10 times. Woof. Everyone did an awesome job!

We hung out for awhile, played some Can Jam outside, and then it was time for the Hero WOD. I love how our Box doesn't do Murph on Memorial Day {we do it in June on the anniversary of his death}, but instead they honor lesser known heroes. This year, we honored Wittman, and did it as a partner WOD.

I ignored the pain in my legs and Mike and I partnered up and suffered through this one. Our great communication skills and teamwork paid off, and we dug deep in honor of Wittman and Memorial Day.

After an awesome barbecue and relaxing in the parking lot with some great people, we headed home. Mike cut the grass, which gave me just enough time to shower and go treat myself to getting my nails and toes done...  all while thinking about how LUCKY we are to get to cut our grass and get our nails done.

I also stopped at HomeGoods and literally could not squat down to look at this shelf full of adorable glasses {on sale!} Four days of torturing your legs will do that, but it was so worth it!

This year's Gathering of the Tribe really made me wish I went last year, even though I was a newbie and probably wouldn't have done any of the WODs. It was just fun to get to hang out with everyone, not be in a rush to finish your workout and get somewhere, and to meet people from our coaches' time overseas who are part of "The Tribe" and come up to Springfield just for this event! It really says a lot about the bond that is created in this Community and it makes me feel lucky to be a part of it <3
