After our sad and sudden goodbye to Brutus last month, I didn't think Mike would want to even think about getting another pup for a longgggg time. No dog in this whole entire world would ever be like Brutus and Mike probably could never love another dog the way he loved Bru Bru.
But, he started sending me emails of dogs from Labs4Rescue with titles like "Watch the video" and I had a feeling he might be thinking about getting another dog sooner than I had thought. I didn't say much or ask many questions, but there was one that I immediately loved: "Mambo". There was a video of him and he sounded like a great, smart, sweet one year old guy who needed some attention and love in his life.
He came from New Orleans and was being fostered in New York, and coincidentally, he was going to be at a dog rescue convention thing in Connecticut that weekend (March 28) where we could meet him! Mike pretty much had his mind set on this guy after talking with the woman who took him in as a rescue down south, as well as the guy who had just started fostering him in NY a few days beforehand.
The rescue event was insane and it was in a car dealership's downstairs shop area. There were SO MANY dogs from a bunch of different rescue groups and they all had different stories. It was really sad actually. We waited and waited for Mambo to show up, and a few other people were waiting for him too (which Mike did not like because he didn't want to have to compete with anyone for this dog if we ended up getting along with him!)
Mambo finally came in and definitely stood out as he yanked the guy's arm trying to go sniff and kiss and play with every dog in the place! He also jumped on a lady and spilled her coffee on her (she was not happy), jumped on the table and knocked a bunch of stuff off of it, such as tin cans, magnets, pamphlets, etc! He was nuts! You could tell he was just so excited to be there and wanted to see all the dogs and people around! As soon as you started petting him though and got his attention, he would sit on your foot, lean into your leg, and look up with a big happy smile loving the love.
We spent awhile with him and talking to his foster and the people from the organization. As soon as we left, I knew Mike loved this dog and I told him that it was easy to see how sweet he was, and that he just needs attention and a happy home! So Mike called the lady in charge and said he wanted Mambo. She was ecstatic because she had fallen in love with him over the phone over the past week of conversations. I think she wanted him to adopt all the dogs!
So that was it... he was officially going to be adopted by us, but we would have to wait a whole TWO WEEKS because of these crazy Massachusetts rules :(
We passed the time by arguing over the spelling of his name. We knew we wanted to shorten it to Bo, but since he was from New Orleans, I thought we should give his name nice Cajun twist and spell it Beaux. I tried convincing Mike through daily texts, at dinner, by trying to get friends and family to side with me.....
It didn't work. He just wanted to spell it Bo and that's fine, but his real name to me is BEAUX.
We showed Ruby the video of him about 55 times. Sometimes she would get into it and her ears would perk up and her tail would wag as head tilted from side to side. Other times she would just look around the iPad screen and not care at all, but we knew she would be happy when he finally came to live with us!
On Monday, Mike went to pick him up from "isolation" (so sad) in Medfield. He texted me this picture on his way home with Bo and my heart exploded. He was really ours!
I rushed home from school so I could be there to greet him and watch him and Ruby meet. My mom and dad left this adorable basket of new dog toys and a really nice card that made me so happy!
I had Ruby out in the backyard and we brought Bo through te garage to have them meet. I'm sure she was confused at first and maybe even thought it was Brutus (which is so sad to think about), but they sniffed and trotted around and got right into playing hard and chasing each other around.
He is house trained and super smart, but he is really still a puppy and pretty mischievous! He loves to find paper towels and shred them. He also surprised us yesterday by finding sweatpants, sweatshirts, pillows, shoes, and papers from around the house, bringing them all into the living room, and doing who-knows-what with them! He ruined one thing. One very expensive Tory Burch sandal. Luckily, it was pretty old and worn out and kind of ready to be retired, but still, how did he know to pick that one!?!! All of my shoes are now locked up and will never be left anywhere again (Mike, you can thank Bo for finally teaching me that!)
We have been going on nightly walks, which is so nice for all of us. He's such a good boy on walks and we are excited because he is a good running buddy too (Ruby's a great running buddy, but Brutus was not)!!
Ruby isn't used to being the old one. She is almost 6 and this big gjant puppy has kind of rocked her world.
Bo is getting more calm and tired, too. Between running around with Ruby, playing ball with us, and our long walks, he is getting a lot of exercise and is nice and calm most of the time.
The first night, he would only sleep in our bed! Like, we could not get him off, and when we took him off, he'd just jump right up again. Right into my new flamingo sheets!
We felt really bad because he had only been with us for like five hours at that point, and had just been in isolation for two whole days, so we let him sleep with us. He is so long and big, though, it was not comfortable and there was no way it was going to happen again- we had to come up with a plan! Luckily, the next night, we kicked him off a bunch of times again, and he gave up and went and slept on the couch downstairs with Ruby! Thank god! So far, that has been the routine, so I'm glad that little issue was easy to fix (knock on wood!)
Here are some things we have learned about Bo so far:
He is great in the car but doesn't stick his head out the window
He eats faster and more violently than any dog I've ever seen! We have to feed him a half cup at a time to slow him down a tiny bit!
He will drink from the toilet
He loves playing ball and brings it right back to you
He likes to dig
He has the softest, silkiest fur ever
He doesn't shed like crazy (at least not right now)
He loves to find things around the house and bring them into the living room
He is super springy and can jump over things and onto things like a kangaroo!
He jumps on the counter and table when no one is home
He loves bottles of all kinds. Here he took my Blender Bottle off the counter and I came home to this:
When he is tired, he sleeps HARD. So hard, that I get nervous because he goes from playing like a maniac to collapsing into the floor and not responding because he is passed out tired!
We can't wait to see how he likes swimming- maybe we will take him this weekend and see how he does!
We love him and we are so happy he is ours. We love you, Bo (Beaux)!!!
